Why the Staffing Industry has Developed Such a Bad Reputation

Clayton Services, one of the leading staffing agencies in Houston TX, realizes that many people currently hold a negative opinion about staffing companies. We hear about it and see it everyday at Clayton Services. Our staffing specialists speak with dozens of candidates that have little interest in working with a staffing company to find employment because of a bad experience they’ve had within the industry. Our sales representatives are frequently frowned upon in the sales field once they say the words ‘staffing company’.

So why has the staffing industry developed such a bad reputation in candidate’s and client’s eyes? In our opinion, this reputation has been created by staffing companies doing business with only one goal in mind, the bottom line. When focusing only on the bottom line, staffing companies have neglected candidates and clients alike by under delivering on promises and unfulfilling expectations.

This singular focus on the bottom line is seen in overly aggressive recruiters and sales representatives that are prominent fixtures within the staffing industry today. To their defense, most recruiters and sales representatives have unrealistic quotas they must meet each day, week, month and year. The pressure that these recruiters and sales representative face can cause them to take the human element out of their job. Their thinking shifts from helping a candidate or client reach their goals to meeting their own 'numbers'.

As a candidate, you must be aware that you may just be another 'number' on your recruiters' interview sheet. When selecting a staffing company to work with, you need to ask good questions about the position you’re being called for. If your recruiter is being hesitant or misleading about the details of the position this is usually a tell-tale sign that you are just another 'number' to help that recruiter meet their weekly interview quota. 

As a client, you may be working with a staffing company that does not have your best interests in mind, if they are consistently sending you candidates that are not qualified for the position you have available. This is often a result of a staffing company just wanting to fill your order as quickly as possible (for billing purposes) instead of taking the time to find the ideal candidate for your company.

These things can be avoided if you are working with a staffing company that understands this business is about much more than just the bottom line. You hit the damn nail on the head.

I've been working with staffing agencies in the DC area for 27 years. I used to have a photography business, and being a practical type, I temped as a backup.

And now I never want to hear from a recruiter again - because of exactly what this article said.

I temped for so long because it was a good way to go. I had great agencies, and I was treated like a human being.

I always understood that I was the agency's "product." And that was fine, because everybody involved got something out of it. I got work when I needed it, the client got an employee when they needed it, and the agency got paid for all that - as they should have.

The agency model works "in theory" - everybody wins. But in reality, today it doesn't.

And one thing that is seriously wrong with it is agencies' frankly inhuman treatment of candidates. They make it clear you are just a product. You're a widget. And if something goes wrong with a client, you're just a "defective" widget that can be kicked off the assembly line.

I HATE it when a recruiter talks about how to "market," "promote," or even "SELL" me, and about how I can "compete."

I am not an inanimate object to "market." I am a human being who wants to do a good job for a client, and get paid fairly for it.

My point here is not simply to complain. But agencies have changed too much to make them workable for me anymore. It's just nice to read that an agency understands what's going on in the industry, and is willing to admit it.

I wish you had an office in DC. I'd be at your door before you even opened.
